Waterfalls, narrow forests, and palm-lined gorges extend from the plateaus downward, most of which are covered in open forests and grasslands.
Much of the surrounding lowland landscape is apparently ancient.
Here, large tracts of dense miombo woodland cover the rolling hills.
Open-plot pastures are scattered here and there, while wet grasslands flank small streams that meander downstream.
The Serra do Mocoti is not only notable for its beauty but also for remaining almost untouched by the deforestation for agriculture that degrades much of Huíla's eastern landscape.
This is the case with the mountain and the 20 to 30 kilometers of lowlands to the south.
Little appears to be known about the plant and animal life of the area, and it is quite likely that Mocoti and its adjacent forests are a sanctuary for many rare species, perhaps even endemic organisms that appear nowhere else.
