The Cuvango Catholic Mission, founded in 1888 by French priest Ernesto Lecomte, has been a centre of education in the southern region of Angola, providing educational opportunities for those who would otherwise not have access to them. The mission underwent significant rehabilitation between 2007 and 2011, culminating in its elevation to the status of National Material Cultural Heritage.
Located 350 kilometres east of the city of Lubango, the mission has now become a reference point for those seeking to explore and understand the cultural and historical richness of Angola.
The structure of the Cuvango Catholic Mission church, in the province of Huíla, elevated to the status of Material and Cultural Heritage on 9 April 2024, is regarded by the municipal administrator as the cathedral of religious tourism.
With the elevation of the Cuvango Catholic Mission and other monuments to the category of National Material Cultural Heritage, Huíla Province reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting its rich historical and cultural heritage.
