Lubango- One thousand 797 thousand trees, including ornamental, native and fruit trees, were planted in this Saturday, in several areas of the city of Lubango, province of Huíla, in an initiative by a group of young people led by social activist Manuel das Mangas “Mwene Vunongue”.

These are species such as grevileas, pines, mubango, jacarandas, yellow acacias, cedars, bougainvillea, palm trees, guava trees, hoses among other ornamentals, an initiative that joins the Lubango Municipal Administration project, called “Meu Lubango, Meu Espelho”, released this year.

In statements to ANGOP, Mwene Vunongue said that the activity focused on promoting environmental preservation, combating effects of climate change and make the city of Lubango much more forested.

He detailed that the tree planting was only possible thanks to the support of individuals and some companies and institutions that joined the cause, with the purchase of three thousand seedlings, of which one thousand 797 have already been planted.

He said the goal was to reach five thousand by 2025.

According to the initiative's mentor, they received technical support from technicians from the Center for Studies in Biodiversity and Education Environment(CEBEA) and the Educational Research and Development Center(CIDE), of the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Education (ISCED) of Huíla and the municipal administration of Lubango.

In turn, the director of CEBEA, José Tyamba, highlighted that the center's support focused on the selection of tree species that best suited to Lubango's climate and in mapping the areas where the seedlings were planted.

This time, some avenues were defined in the city center, such as the airport area up to the Avozinha roundabout and others, with the largest plantation areas being the Eywa neighborhood and the Três Pontes town, essentially on the perimeter that benefited from road rehabilitation works.

Meanwhile, the head of the Environment section of the Lubango administration, Salomão Missão, praised the initiative of this group of young people, who joins “Meu Lubango, Meu Espelho”, which aims to plant more than eight thousand trees by 2025. BP/PLB
