The Municipality of Humpata is located in the south of the province. It is limited to the North by the municipality of Lubango, to the East by the municipality of Chibia, to the South by the municipality of Virei, and to the West by the municipality of Bibala. It consists only of the municipality of Humpata. With an altitude of 1937m, the municipality of Humpata has great tourist potential. It was one of the areas where the first settlers settled, taking into account the natural beauty of the region. Humpata is also a land of excellence in fruit growing, with emphasis on the production of strawberries and citrus fruits.
For those interested in monuments and historic buildings, here are some options for visitors to the province of Huíla, more precisely in the Municipality of Humpata:
Casa do Norton de Matos
Characterized by an English-style residence, built of wood, the first made with this material in the province of Huíla. It is built inside the Agricultural Experimental Station, supported by a base of concrete pillars.
General Norton de Matos was one of the most important strategists of Portuguese colonialism during the First Republic . He achieved unprecedented autonomy for the administration of Angola, where he left, above all, work done in public works. He defended an apartheid-type racial regime and silenced the colony's first proto-nationalist voices.
It is characterized by a Cemetery where we can find a Boere style pyramid as well as graves with dates that indicate approximately the time in that the Bórere people lived in the Humpata region.
The Boers, or Afrikaners, are descendants of the Dutch who settled in South Africa, particularly in the Cape Colony, in the mid-17th century, and of French Protestants who fled the religious wars in Europe. They even developed their own language - Afrikaans, currently one of the official languages of South Africa -, but after wars with the British, in dispute over the colonization of that territory, the community, highly specialized in agricultural production, began the so-called "Great Journey " to the north. Part of the group continued their journey through the current territory of Namibia, reaching and traveling along the banks of the Cubango and Cunene rivers, arriving in Angola at the end of the 19th century. After understanding with the Portuguese colonial power, they were authorized to cultivate land in Humpata, as was the case with the farm then, it is thought, created by the family patriarch, Johannes Van Der Merwe, still buried today in the farm's cemetery. According to the inscription on the tombstone placed on the grave, he was born in 1752 and died in Humpata on June 9, 1884. Van Der Merwe or Botha are the nicknames of the Boer families buried several decades ago in the cemetery on that farm, the only one of several that came to exist in Humpata, which is duly preserved.
The Escola de Regentes Agrícolas do Tchivinguiro, by architect Vasco Regaleira, is a reference institution in the country (to which the Church of Tchivinguiro and the Mission, both from 1892, are associated). Although it was created in 1938, under the name of Escola Agro-Pecuária da Huíla (initially called Escola Agro-Pecuária Dr. Francisco Vieira Machado), the first stone of the building was only laid in 1942, and only in 1957 did the Escola de Agricultural Regents. In June 1980 it became known as the Tchivinguiro Agricultural School Complex and subsequently, until today, the Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences.
It is characterized by a Mission where several people passed through as inmates, including managers. We still find it in addition to the Catholic Church, old lime kilns and a cemetery
