April 18th, International Monuments and Sites Day

Established by UNESCO in 1983, with the aim of raising awareness among member states to diversify, protect and conserve cultural heritage.
Representing an annual moment of celebration of patrimonial diversity, it is intended that April 18 to function as a commemorative milestone of national cultural heritage, but also celebrates international solidarity around the safeguarding and valorization of cultural heritage around the world.

Angola has a considerable historical-cultural heritage, highlighting buildings, sites and places of memory, rock art, natural parks, fauna and flora.

according to the Angolan ministry of culture, in the concrete case of built heritage, sites or places of memory constitute the most eloquent testimony of the historical path of activity and the sensitivity of the Angolan people at different times, contexts and situations that mark their history.

beyond several historical places that the country has, special attention should be provided to the rupestrian paintings located in the province of Namibe, which constitute tourist destination that can be used by both the executive and private investors.

The date is an opportunity to sensitize the public about the diversity of cultural heritage, and the efforts that their protection and conservation require. It also allows to expose its vulnerability and need to pay continuous attention.

This way, every year it is asked from UNESCO member states that, on this day, promote activities and free visits to historical sites, monuments and museums.
